Former Speaker of Parliament wants to serve

A man who became one of the youngest Samoans to be appointed Speaker of Parliament, Leota Leuluaiali’i Ituau Ale, believes he has a lot more to offer.

That is why at 75-years-old, Leota has put his name in the hat to contest the Anoama’a West seat once again. In doing that, Leota is up against the Deputy Prime Minister,  Fonotoe Pierre Lauofo and another candidate, Tufeao Fanolua Pulepule.

Speaking to the Samoa Observer, Leota said despite the many years he had served his constituents, the people of Anoama’a Sisifo can still benefit from his experience and willingness to help.

Leota said on top of his priority list are good roads. He said the roads at Saoluafata, Sauniatu, Solaua and Manunu need to be fixed.

The people of Luatuanu’u also need their access road to be fixed to allow people to easily access their plantations.

But that’s not the only issue at Luatuanu’u. Leota said a seawall is needed because of the village’s location next to the sea. With rising sea levels and the impact of climate change, Leota believes Luatuanu’u is vulnerable.

Education is another priority area. If he is voted in, Leota said he wants to work closely with different villages to identify their needs and cater for them accordingly.

The former MP is also looking at ways to improve the development of youth. He lamented the lack of opportunities to allow young people to develop their talents.

Part of his plans include entering teams like the Ifilele and Uila Emo  in competitions in New Zealand to allow them to get better.

Leota became a Member of Parliament in 1970.

In 1976 to 1978, he became the youngest Speaker of the House.

Contesting the seat for Anoama’a Sisifo as an Independent Member, Leota said he is reasonably confident about his winning chances.
