A man accused of sexual connection with a girl under 16 appeared in the Supreme Court on Monday.

Siulepa Fata faces charges of sexual connection, including rape.

Chief Justice, His Honor Patu Tiava’asu’e Falefatu Sapolu, asked the accused if he wanted a lawyer.

“Yes, Your Honor,” he said. “I am also asking if I am eligible for legal aid.”

Prosecutor Lucy Sio asked the Court if the matter could be adjourned for two weeks for the charges to be finalised.

“The request from the prosecutor has been granted therefore this matter will be adjourned on 11 September for the prosecutor to finalise the charges,” said Chief Justice Patu.

“This will also give the accused some time to apply for legal aid.”

The incident occurred last month and the accused is remanded in custody.
