Lealaitagomoa Moa of Siufaga, Falelatai worries about the impact of technology when it is misused by young people.

Speaking to the Village Voice yesterday, he said while he is aware about the positive developments, the government should not ignore the negatives.

“I mean let’s take Facebook as an example, so many young people have Facebook accounts,” he told Village Voice.

“These youngsters are so quick on technology nowadays and they are always on their phones 24/7. That scares me because when you have access to the internet, who knows what they are watching. It could be pornography.”

Leaitagomoa said technology has transformed the world.

“But it is our job as parents to protect our children,” he said.

“We should set boundaries and limits in terms of usage of technology.”

“And if something were to happen with my kids over some technological issues; I would blame myself as a parent for not doing my duty in the first place; and that is to look after my kids.”

“That is why I want to voice this because I want all parents to stand together with me and push this forward: we must always make sure we know what our kids are up to.”

“We need to monitor the times they use their phones and computers especially when they are still at a young age.”

“If not that; then set a time limit for using their mobile phones and computers just so we can sleep at night knowing they are safe.”

“It is always important to remind ourselves that we are parents and it is up to us to save our own kids from things that could go wrong.”

“Nothing wrong with change and I know that technology is a good change but that’s if we don’t let our kids get affected by it.”

“Talk and advise them along the way. It could be annoying to them but it is better to inform them than just letting them do what they think is right when it’s wrong.”
