Better roads save time and money.

Most importantly, it helps people become more productive.

For many people residing at the village of Vailele, this is their ultimate hope.

Their frustrations were voiced by Alapati Leo, 63, when the Village Voice caught up with him yesterday.

The elderly father also has roots in Sato’alepai.

According to him, their struggles and hardship come in the form of a dirt road.

“We are tired of having to live with this problem every day,” he said. “When it rains it’s bad, when it’s sunny it’s bad. We can hardly do anything because the road is so bad.

“Where is the government?

“What about the Minister responsible for the road? What are they doing about it?”

Alapati said there are many people like him who are fed up and frustrated.

“The truth is we’ve been living here for years now and I can tell you that we’ve had this problem for a long time.

“It’s such a bad thing for us because it’s difficult to deliver the fruits of my garden to the market.

“Sometimes we don’t sell things at all because of the road problems. It’s just hard to carry taro, banana, and other produce from the plantation to catch the bus.”

Alapati went on to say that something must be done to fix the road.

“I think this is also a health hazard,” he said.

“Children’s lives are at risk because of the poor condition of the roads.

“Most our children walk to school every day and its dangerous for them too.”

He is also worried about the cost of fixing their cars.

“A new car that keeps driving on this road will surely be destroyed.

“The truth is most taxi drivers and buses are avoiding coming to drop off people here because of the road.

“This is why we are desperate to get this road fixed.”
