A young man with an ambitious dream

“I want to become a doctor.”

That’s what 16-year-old Simone Pu’a told the Village Voice team yesterday.

The fourth child of the six children attends St. Joseph’s College.

He is finishing his Year 13 and aiming to become a doctor. He’s taking steps to achieve his dream,  including taking up full Science courses majoring in Chemistry and Biology.

Simone is motivated by one of his uncles who is also a doctor and lives in Australia

“I’ve been dreaming of becoming a doctor since I was little,” he said.

“I love helping people in every way I can so for me to achieve my goal, I must make sure that I study hard and be smart to make my parents proud.”

Even at his young age, Simone knows life is tough.

“I’ve faced lots and lots of difficulties in life as a student in terms of finances and school work.”

“I’m a prefect and I value that a lot. I take that very seriously.”

The cost of learning is an obstacle.

Textbooks for instance are very expensive.

“But my parents try really hard to buy one for the sake of us,” he said.

Simone wants to reward his parents for their hard work.

“I want to earn a good salary and be a good employee to support my family and my siblings,” he said.

“My family is not that wealthy. We struggle financially, especially as they are paying for me and my little brothers’ school fees.”

Simone parents are his inspiration.

He sees the struggle and the sacrifices they make for them every day.

“My Mom is a teacher and my Dad is a tyre repair worker. Their salary from their work is not enough to pay for our school fees. So for me I know I have to do my best to help them out.”

It is also why he is motivated to achieve his goal of becoming a doctor.

But for that to happen, first things first.

“I know I have to make everyday count in terms of studies,” he said.

“I thank God for this great opportunity he has given to me to pursue my dream of becoming a doctor.”

“I’m looking forward to finishing this last year in College by working hard, studying smart and putting God first in everything.”

“I also take extra tutorials. I don’t want to waste any time. I avoid Facebook and social media issues where most of the young generation are so caught up with these days.”

Simone encourages other young people to follow their dreams.

“We all know that not all of our people are well educated but instead of sitting around, God gave us many talents to develop such as making handicrafts, fishing and farming.”

Everything is an education.”
