This year’s World Aids Day celebration in Samoa started in the early hours of yesterday morning at the Black Sand Beach, Vaisigano.

The candle lighting ceremony was initiated by the Samoa Fa’afafine Association with support from Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi.

The celebration also marked the opening of the 2017 Fa’afafine Week.

Tuilaepa, during the celebration, echoed the theme “My Health My Right”.

He said HIV/Aids can be prevented if everyone works together.

He said the Ministry of Health and the H.I.V. /A.I.D.S. organization were carrying out awareness programmes to educate families, village members, churches and the community on how to prevent the virus from spreading.

Tuilaepa, who is also the patron of Samoa Faafafine Association, emphasized the importance of the work and services provided by members of the association in Samoa.

He says everyone is the same in the eyes of God and that every person should be treated fairly and equally. The ceremony ended with the Prime Minister lighting the lantern.
