The Land Transport Authority (L.T.A.) has announced new changes to taxi operations in Samoa to be enforced on 1 March 2018, which would affect about a hundred taxis currently on the road.

These changes were announced during a press conference at the authority’s office at Vaitele, on Thursday.

Manager for Road Use Management, Tauiliili Sala Bartley, said vehicles produced in 2002, 2001 and years before that will no longer be allowed to be used as taxis.

“These vehicles can be registered as a private vehicle,” he said.

“The decision has come about because of the complaints raised by the general public who are using such services daily.

“Some taxis do not have air condition or a customer hops inside the car and it is full of rubbish. The window and car handles are damaged.

“Those are some of the things that concerns the Land Transport Authority because we prioritize the safety of our people.”

Tauiliili estimates that around a hundred taxis will no longer be of service come March, 2018.

There are about 30 taxi stands in Upolu and Savai’i.
