Being a man means having the ability to provide for your family.

So says family man, Tom Fetalaiga, of Falelauniu.

Speaking to the Village Voice team, the 27-year-old said he works for a company at Si’usega.

“I am the source of income for my family so that is why I work hard every day,” he said.

Tom has two children.

“My job covers everything that we need; pays for my children’s school, our food, our bills, I mean everything,” he said.

“But my children are my first priority in life.”

“I know that as a father, I am obligated to do all these things for my family because I’m the head of the family.”

“No matter the rain and the sun, I have to go to work every day because I love my family.”

Tom earns $200 per week.

“It’s not enough, but we try every day to stretch it from time to time, we all know that this life is not a walk in the park.”

“That’s why when I’m on day off from work; I always try to use my time to do little things like making food for the family and work on our land.”

“We all know that there are times when money is not enough or we have financial problems, but it’s always good to have a plan for our children.”

“Sometimes we even deal with so many obligations and honestly, it doesn’t feel good to be having so much on our plates.”

“So I’m used to working hard and I think it has always been my nature.”

“But all fathers would do everything to get their families the life they deserve because that’s why we were put on this earth.”

Tom says his only nightmare is when he will not be able to provide for his wife and children.

“I pray that day doesn’t come,” he said.

“It’s hard, but that’s how life is these days, if we don’t sweat, you’ll die and your whole family will die with you.”

Tom says raising a family is worthwhile no matter the struggles.
