United States strengthens education ties with Samoa

The United States of America and Samoa’s partnership continued to strengthen with the official opening of two major educational projects in Safata yesterday.

The Safata College and Sataoa Primary School celebrated the completion of work there.

The projects were funded by the U.S. Department of Defense’s Overseas Humanitarian, Disaster, and Civic Aid (O.H.D.A.C.A).  

This is the same fund that built the Faleolo Medical Center, the Sa’anapu Primary School hall, and that will be rebuilding Asaga Primary in Savaii this year.  

Renovations for Safata College School were:

1. Construction of a new two-story (4 room, 312 m²) classroom block with toilet and septic tank

2. Replacement of the main gate 

Renovations for Sataoa Primary School were:

1. Major renovations to the six-classroom school block and teacher’s room

a. Replaced all doors, windows, ceiling, soffit, blackboards, electrical

b. Reinforced concrete slab and patched walls

c. Repainted school building

2. New perimeter fence and main gate

Minister of Education, Loau Keneti Sio, acknowledged the United States government for their support.

U.S. Ambassador to Samoa, Scott Brown, delivered remarks on behalf of the United States government thanking all the development and community partners that helped bring these projects to fruition. 

“Our hope is that these new facilities will vastly improve the education experience at these two schools.  These projects are symbolic of our enduring support and of the vibrant friendship our two nations enjoy,” Ambassador Scott Brown.  

The Safata multistory complex was built in accordance with the International Building code and U.S. engineering standards and is certified to withstand a category 5 cyclone.
