Being born into a family with fourteen siblings has its blessings.
But it also comes with many challenges.
For Paulo Matagi, of Siuniu Falealili, he knows that many people need to be cared for and fed. Which is why he is looking for a job.
The 20-year-old said there are only four people in his family who work while the rest are unemployed, including him.
“I really would like a job,” he said. “As you can imagine, we’ve got quite a big family and we need money.”
But there is also a personal reason for his desire to work.
“I love my mother and I want to support her as much as I can with the things that she needs at home.
“I’ve also got nieces and nephews I want to set a good example for.”
Paulo knows that life is hard.
“That is a fact but it has become much more complicated in this time especially with the resumption of school for the young ones.
“There are so many things to prepare such as their school uniforms, stationaries and fees.”
Paulo added that it has been hard for his mother ever since his father passed away.
“She has to carry the weight of the entire family with the decision making, looking after our land and all of us.”
He is certain that being employed will ease his mother’s worries about so many things she has on her plate.
The cost of living is a real struggle, he added.
“Everything nowadays is expensive and the world moves when money is present in the scene.
“We have family commitments and church activities we need to contribute to but the problem is we do not have enough to give because the other portion is put aside for the welfare of our family.”
Paulo told the Village Voice team that he often works the land for his family’s needs .
His mother Tumua shared that she wants her son Paulo to work so that he can help their family financially.
She also believes that having a job will educate her son about how difficult life has become.
