Yesterday was a great day for Avele College at Apia Park.

The school dominated the track and field events during the Zone A athletics competition.

Ten schools took part.

The Girls category saw Palalaua College from Siumu running away with the junior girls awards, while Avele College topping Intermediate and Senior Girls Division.

In the boys’ category, Avele College won almost all the events for senior division with 72 points total.

Samoa College came second with 28 points, and Leifiifi College on third spot with 23 total points.

Leifiifi College won the Junior Boys and Intermediate boys division

Zone A’s Inter-College President, Lesaisaea Matafeo Reupena, who is also Avele College’s Principal, was pleased with the outcome of yesterday’s competition.

He was especially grateful to the support of parents, teachers and all the students who made yesterday a successful day.

Matafeo said the latest success from Athletics Samoa at the Oceania competition in Fiji earlier this year has revived interest in the competition.

Many students from Zone A schools represented Samoa.

Matafeo added the athletes at schools are grassroots level and it is vital that their skills are honed from such a young age.

Many of them, he said, will go on to represent Samoa at the Pacific Games in 2019.
