A sailor from Samoa, Maria Gay, is one of four young people from the Pacific who have received a scholarship to compete in the Youth Worlds to be held in Sanya, China this December.

Maria participated in a World Sailing Emerging Nations Programme (E.N.P.) held in Port Vila, Vanuatu in mid April this year.

She finished in the top four after competing against other young sailors from Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Guam, the Cook Islands New Zealand and Vanuatu.

The programme aims to the develop performance level of youth sailors under 19 year olds, teaching skills needed both on and off water to coaches and sailors wishing to compete at an international level.

It also serves to increase youth sailors’ participation in the Youth Worlds and narrow the performance gap between nations.

The competition was held at the Iririki Resort at Post Vila.
