It’s that time of the year again. For members of the Samoa’s outrigger canoeing fraternity, it’s time to shed the holiday excess and get back on the water for another year of paddling.

That’s precisely what happened on Saturday when the Samoa Outrigger Canoeing Association (S.O.C.A) hosted its first annual regatta for the year.

Five local Club teams including Laumei, Tautai, Nafanua, Vaai lau Foe and Alyia took part in the Open Men’s and Women’s V6 5 Kilometers dash staged at the beach in front of Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Hotel.

The Women’s dash was a close one to call. Tautai finished first with a time of 25.25 but wasn’t counted due to having a male paddler on their canoe.

Laumei team came second with a time of 25.33 with Nafanua coming in third with their best time of 25.39.

Laumei team dominated the Open Men’s race. They recorded a time of 18.45 with Tautai coming second with a time of 19.40. Vaai lau Foe came third, Nafanua fourth while Alyia finished last.

S.O.C.A. Secretary, Moana Schrenkenberg, said the regattas are part of preparations for international competitions they have got lined up for this year.

“This is our first race to kick start our 2018 season just like the previous years,” she said.

“We are also building up from these regattas going on to our International tournaments like the World Sprints which will be held in Tahiti, as well as Alo Paopao End of Year Competition.”

S.O.C.A. is looking forward to a busy year ahead.

“Our V6 racing will be held every two months, and our V1 races competition every month.

“We will also be hosting a new race this year called Sheraton to Sheraton, which starts from the Apia Sheraton going to Mulifanua Sheraton.”

Ms. Schrenkenburg is also encouraging anyone to join the fun.

“We are still inviting anyone to join any team so they can experience the fun with this sport. Next week will be our next race, and that will be our V1 races.”
