A rising Sevens star

Twenty four year old Tomasi Alosio is a rising Samoa 7’s star.

He hails from the villages of Levi Saleimoa and Falefa and he is performing extremely well on this year’s circuit under Coach Damian McGrath.

Tomasi is based in New Zealand with his partner Michaela and their two children, Jamera and Chaesi.

He is from Upper Hutt and went to school at St. Patricks College Silverstream and his club team whilst playing in New Zealand was Hutt Old Boys Marist.

We managed to sit down with Tomasi and have a chat with him about the upcoming tournaments and the Monaco Repechage;

How are you and the team

feeling ahead of Monaco?

Pretty confident, the coach has had consistent training and selection since the Wellington 7’s. We have the right structures in place and trainings have been good. Few nerves but that is expected.

How will you feel if you make

the Olympics?

It will be a dream come true! The thought of playing in the first Olympic 7’s is an honour and has been a goal for me since I heard it had become an Olympic sport. It’s great for me & my family and a challenge I’m really looking forward to.

What’s the best thing about

being home in Samoa?

Mainly by seeing the way my parents would have lived and the childhoods they had. Seeing how they grew up and the struggles they faced. It makes me grateful and thankful for what I have in NZ.

Who is the best player you

have played with?

Uale Mai, he was a legend for Samoa and an around fantastic player. He always played with heart.

Who is the best player you

have played against?

Sea Kolinisau (FIJI), he’s the smallest guy on the field but plays his heart out and is a true leader.

He fears nothing and puts everything on the line.

Who was you

inspiration growing up?

My parents, especially my Father. He always pushed me to be the best athlete I could be.

He always made me get up in the morning and made me a stronger and better player.

How is the team performing

under Coach Damian

McGrath?

He really cares about player welfare and always puts us first.

He trusts his squad so we are very confident even though sometimes we don’t get the result there’s a great belief under Damian.

Who is the Joker

of the team?

Savelio Ropati, he is a real joker and has a great vibe, he always makes us smile and brightens the bad moments.

Best and Worst part of

being in a tour

Best part is probably seeing all the new places and getting to travel, very fortunate that we get to travel the world through a sport I love.

Worst part is definitely missing my kids and family that is the hardest part of tour for me

Favourite tournament?

Hong Kong lived up to expectations but wellington for me as it is my hometown and getting to play in front of my family was a real pleasure for me and you don’t get to do that very often.
