Leulumoega Fou College is the undisputed champions of the Secondary Schools Invitational 7’s Rugby Championships, which kicked off last Thursday at Apia Park.

Leulumoega topped the men’s tournament while Palauli i Sisifo from Savai’i dominated the Girl’s division.

The competition featured 12 boys’ team and three girls’ team.

Leulumoega Fou College, Samoa College and Palalaua College were in Pool A, Saint Joseph’s College was in Pool B with Paul IV College and Safata College.

The Women’s division comprised of four schools; Avele College, Palauli i Sisifo College, Vaimauga College and Leulumoega Fou College.

Tournament Director Shalom Senara said the main purpose of the tournament was to identify and promote the 7s game in the Secondary school levels, given the successful Commonwealth Youth Games Rugby 7s results in the Bahamas earlier this year.

Senara said he was impressed with what he had witnessed with the tournament this year.

“In today’s tournament, our Under18 sevens International tournament has been really good.”

“For me personally it’s been a big change from last year’s 7s tournament, and what I have been really impressed with is how the kids have been emphasizing more on the basics, for example the kickoffs, low tackling rucks and break downs”.

Senara also emphasized the quality of rugby presented by the students during this tournament.

“The quality and how important the basics with the kids it’s been really good, it’s been a good process and few schools have stood up with their performances.”

In the women’s division, Palauli Sisifo College took home the first prize of the tournament after defeating Leulumoega Fou College 19-14 at fulltime as well as smashing the Avele Girls team 21-0 at fulltime.

For the Men’s division, Leulumoega Fou College went up against a strong Avele College side for the first semifinal match of the day, where Leulumoega Fou College defeated Avele College 17-7 at Fulltime.

Wesley College narrowly defeated Saint Joseph’s College during the second semifinal clash winning 15-14 at fulltime.

The final match of the tournament saw the dominance of Leulumoega Fou College defeating old rivals Wesley College in a hotly contested match 21-12 at fulltime.

Elia To’omatavai of Wesley College went away with the Player of the Tournament’s award while Leulumoega Fou College player Tuna Tuitama took home with him the man of the match award of the final game.

Manu Samoa National 7s head Coach Sir Gordon Tietjens was also present during the tournament eyeing some of the young players to be introduced in the 7s environment.
