Fishing is hard but the rewards are sweet and sufficient.

So says Talia Saifoloi from Fasitoo-uta.

The 46-years old is a fisherman. He uses his talent to provide for his family.

“I prefer fishing because I know very well I earn lots of money from it,” he said.

“When the fishing trip goes well I earn more than a thousand tala especially on Sunday mornings.

“For me, this is well enough for my family. All of my kids are in school so the money I earn from my fishing is for their school fees and family faalavelave.”

Talia sells fish Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday mornings.

He loves being in the water.

The only problem is when the weather changes.

“When the sea is rough, I put safety first making sure that I don’t get stuck in the middle of the sea knowing that my family only depends on me for a living.

“The plantation is my other choice if the weather is not good enough for fishing.”

Talia understands the cost of living is very expensive.

“We can’t do anything about it,” he said.

“Let the government decide that on their own. We cannot move away from it, our people are used to it from the start up until now. “

As for the future, Talia said he prays that God will continue to grant him the strength to fish.

“There will always be fish to catch and as long as that is the case, I know I will be able to look after my family always.”
