A week-long celebration of the National Literacy and Numeracy Week began yesterday morning with a parade which started from the Fire Station to the front of the Government Building.

Nine schools assembled from each zone that had participated in competitions in the past four weeks.

Speaking at the opening, was the Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, 

“Education is a fundamental human right and therefore continues to be a priority of the government,” he said.

“This is why today’s gathering is significant because it allows other opportunities for everyone to be reminded of the importance of literacy and numeracy.

“These skills are also crucial to a person with a disability to develop fully as an individual.”

The Minister went on to say that life can be satisfying if we participate fully in our society.

“We all must play a part in creating a brighter future for our children and the only way to do that is through education,” he said.

“The theme of this year’s programme is “Explore through words and numbers”.

“We create an important message in not just the young children but also the leaders of our community.

“Everyone has a need to use the basic skills of literacy and numeracy in almost every part of our lives and also when we communicate with each other in traditional forms and through the internet and digital media. 

“To the students you are here as witnesses and I commend your hard work and wish you all the best.”

He acknowledged the support of the parents and especially the sponsors for helping making the week work.
