Samoa joined countries around the world to celebrate World Teachers Day yesterday.

The day was marked with a celebration held in front of the Government Building at Matagialalua.

“Teaching in Freedom, Empowering Teachers” is the theme of this year’s World Teachers Day celebrations. 

The celebration honored the service of teachers in Samoa and their contribution to education.

Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, Loau Keneti Sio, reminded teachers about the importance of their work.

“Today is to honor and remember the work that you, the teachers of Samoa, do for all the children of this country to become successful in life,” Loau said.

“You have been given the most difficult task because there are times that you get blamed when the student’s grades don’t come out positive.

“People point fingers at you when things don’t go according to plans.

 “You are a teacher and the govt. of Samoa, as well as the parents and the community, are relying on you for a better future of the children of Samoa.

Loau also reminded teachers of their professional calling and their role in shaping the future of children.

“My advice for you is to keep going you have a job to do and you have one of the most important job.”

 “I on behalf of the govt. of Samoa join forces with the community to thank all teachers of Samoa for their continuous contribution to the education for our children,” he said.

“May you continue to explain, demonstrate and inspire our children to ensure a stronger foundation for lasting peace and sustainable development of Samoa.” Loau also acknowledged the commitment and dedication of teachers in childhood education centers inclusive education centers, school for children and people with disabilities, Primary, Secondary Schools and Colleges, Tertiary Education and Universities.

This year’s World Teachers Day was organized by the Ministry of Education Sports and Culture. The celebration started with a parade of floats by different school districts from the Fire Services to the front of the Govt. Building.

The day ended with the awards presentation for teacher as well as Price Giving for floats, Banner and Posters.

The winner for the float competition went to Lepa/Lotofaga District. They received a cash prize of $3000 from Business System Limited, a Trophy and Certificate from Samoa Stationery and Books.

Posters winner went to Vaimea Primary School and the Banner Competition went to Itu o Tane II District.
