NEW GOVERNMENT STATISTICIAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF THE SAMOA BUREAU STATISTICS: Aliimuamua MalaefonoTaua-Faasalaina.

Patience and perseverance has paid off for Ali’imuamua MalaefonoTaua-Faasalaina, the new Government Statistician and Chief Executive Officer of the Samoa Bureau of Statistics.

Appointed in January this year by Cabinet, Ali’imuamua brings to the table a wealth of experience and qualifications.

She first started her public service career in 1987 after graduating from the University of the South Pacific in Suva Fiji with a BA in Economics and Administration. 

Back then the Statistics Department was located at the old Court House building in Apia across from the Ministry of Police. 

During her first  five years (1987-1993), she served as the Statistician responsible for the conduct of National Accounts at the Department of Statistics, Government of Samoa.

She left the public service and spent the next five years (1994-1999) as the Research Officer and Part-time Lecturer for Population Studies at the School of Social and Economic Developments at the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji.

And she returned home to spend the next 18 years (1999-2017) with the Samoa Bureau of Statistics, as the Assistant Government Statistician.

Her responsibilities include managing the conduct and analysis of four five-yearly Population and Housing Censuses for Samoa in the years 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016. This includes Demographic Health Surveys, Disability Surveys, Client Satisfaction Surveys and other official household surveys.

 

Qualification:

• BA in Economics & Administration, 1987;  The University of the South Pacific, Suva, Fiji

• PGD in Population Studies, 1990; The University of the South Pacific, Suva, Fiji

• MA in Demography, 1997; The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia

Current International Affiliation:

• Samoa Bureau of Statistics Member in the UN ESCAP Regional Steering Group on Population and Social Statistics since 2017; and; current Chairperson of Technical Working Group 1

• Samoa Bureau of Statistics Member in the UN Washington Group for Disability Statistics; since 2013 to present

 

Personal Bio:

Born August 2nd 1964, Aliimuamua is a graduate of Moataa Primary and Samoa College.

She hails from the villages: Moataa, Lalomanu, Saanapu and Safotu.

Married: to Lemalama Taaloga Faasalaina of Savaia village.

Children: 3 girls and 2 boys (3 already working at Government as Civil Engineer at AA (female) Medical Doctor at NHS (female) and Agriculture Science Teacher (male) at Leififi College and 2 still in school.

Matai title: Aliimuamua (from her father’s  Mulitalo ancestors at Saanapu)
