Education - Helping hands

By Layton Lolo 07 March 2016, 12:00AM

 Have you ever tried

To help another

Tried to make a difference

For a fellow sister or brother

Have you ever seen someone in need

And gave them a hand

If someone needed support

By their side, did you stand?

Do you have a dream

Where you could do more for everyone

Does it seem like a great honor

Or simply no fun

Well I have a dream

Like the great Martin Luther King

Where the world will be free

From wars and killing

But it all begins

With the littlest act

I know this is true

I know it’s a fact

Helping others has always been something I strive to do in life, and with every person helped I feel this rush of joy that makes me feel as though I’m better than the person I was the day before.  But this is the feeling I wish everyone could feel, one wish I dream the future will bring to pass.

But now I want to tell you all and invite you to lend a hand to anyone you see needs help.  I’m trying something new that I hope will work as well as I hope.

I’m going to add in my writings a challenge for every week, a challenge to change the attitude in our country hopefully for the better.  For example, this week’s challenge is to obviously, “Lend a hand.”

I don’t know how many will answer this call to arms in this battle for change but all I wish is that we make a difference.  I wanted to share a recent experience I had while lending a hand for someone.  The person I was helping wasn’t too eager for my help and unintentionally, they hurt me because all I want to do in life is assist and help and this person was saying that all I was doing was annoying her and was adding to her troubles.

But despite her hurtful response I sat down waited for a minute or two, then got up and tried to help from a new perspective.  In the end the person I gave aid to thanked me for my support and I ended up making a new friend.

So if you are going to try and head my challenge for the week or simply in need of advice in helping, my only advice is that if your first attempt doesn’t work, take a step back and think from another point of view.  If that doesn’t work, then just wait until the person you’re trying to help calms down from whatever’s wrong and then try again.

If anyone does take my challenge to lend a hand then I want to hear from you if you can.

You can email me at [email protected].  If you do email me, I could use help in new ideas for challenges and topics to write about, because I can’t do this all on my own.  There are stories out there that even I couldn’t dream of living, so let that story be heard.

Lend a hand today in order to see a brighter future.
