Further assistance was witnessed in the form of international cooperation, with the arrival of two Japanese volunteers to Samoa.

Both women paid courtesy visits and were warmly welcomed by a representative from Aid Coordination Division of the Ministry of Finance on behalf of Samoa’s government, and met with Japanese Embassy in Samoa’s new Ambassador, His Excellency Mr. Shinya Aoki.

The new recruits are ready to embark in their new journey to work closely with the Samoa Swimming Federation’s elite swimmers and assist with Samoa Family Health Association’s Public Awareness Programs over the next two years.

This week they eagerly settled into Samoan language lessons with JICA Samoa Office’s Samoan language expert, Reverend Fuaao Fetalaiga.

Samoa has received over 650 volunteers since JICA’s first mission to Samoa - back in 1972.

With JICA volunteers assisting in priority sectors of Education, Health, Environment, Fisheries, Agriculture, Special Needs, Sports and other fields.  There are 33 volunteers currently working in Samoa, with 24 Junior volunteers and the rest Senior volunteers.

The Volunteer Program is one of JICA’s principal activities as part of its technical cooperation carried out on behalf of the Japanese government, which contributes to the social and economic development of Samoa.
