The Moamoa Theological College Church was packed with priests, deacons, catechists, families, friends and the faithful from around the archdiocese yesterday.

They were there to witness the blessing of four new Catechists and wives after four long years of intense and hard training, followed by one year of pastoral service at various parishes.

But there was a touch of sadness. One of the A’oao, Susuga Alē from Lauli’i was not among the new group due to his sudden death a few weeks ago. Only his wife Elena Alesana was present.

The solemn mass of blessing was led by His Grace Archbishop Alapati Lui Mataeliga. assisted by the Vicar General and members of the clergy. 

The Theme was: ‘’If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me’’ Luke 9:23. 

Within that theme, the Archbishop in his homily reminded the new catechists of the tasks ahead of them and the challenges they inevitably will face along the way at executing their serving duties as anointed servants of God. 

With many inspired words the Archbishop said; ‘’Jesus Christ in His mission while he walked the earth was a service so unique in the sense that He was a very busy servant.

But sad to note that unlike us, Jesus had no place to rest His sacred head…. As Jesus was leading by excellent example, that is also what you should do His Grace said; ‘’Go out and serve with a new heart and hope in faith and prayers.’’

He also empathized imitating our Lord at serving specifically visiting the people.

 ‘’As servants of God, all of us priests, deacons, catechists and the religious as well; do not give up easily as we see these days.  

“Jesus took time to visit the poor. You are also to follow that example and you should take time to visit the village, the sick and in particular your aulotu. Remember the covenant of God with his people is unblemished ….and God bless you with your new roles.”

In reliance on God’s grace the new catechists and faletua took a Declaration after being told of their duties as teachers of the gospel, as leaders, as initiators of all work of faith and covenants of obedience between the Church and the villages. 

Certificates and Diplomas presentation by the Vicar General, Fr Poao Saena and Monsignor Fr Joe Stowers before the Mass ended and was announced by Fr James Skelton - Principal of the Theological College. 

The ceremony concluded with the traditional ava and refreshments. The new catechists include: Etuale and Tina Kolose who will serve at Theological College, Sefo and Mila Mulipola who will serve at Mauga, Tutusa Sanele and Senia Ah Kuoi will serve at Satumalufilufi and finally Iakopo and Eseta Ale will serve at Asau.

All the new appointments and parish allocations will become effective in February 2018.
