Father hunts for a job for his family

To’oloa Meki from Fasitoo-uta is looking for a job.

The father of five is a farmer but he says he is looking for a more regular income so he can feed his family.

“I’m keen to learn and try out new things,” he said.

“Any job I get I will appreciate. I just want to earn money for my family especially my children whom I am most concerned about.”

To’oloa has three children in school.

The other two stay home.

“School fees worry me the most because two of my children are in College,” he said.

“As a father I have to make sure that I can provide for them by paying their school fees.

“Sometimes I sell the fruits of my plantation to earn some money but that is not a guarantee all the time. Sometimes we don’t have money to get by.”

Tooloa said even in cases where he has money, it runs out very quickly.

“We don’t just earn money for ourselves, we also have family faalavelave as well as church contributions and other things.

“Sometimes these things all demand from us at the same time.

“The church and village obligations are expensive but we have no choice.”

Tooloa agrees that the cost of living is ridiculous – especially for people like him who don’t have money.

“It’s a struggle,” he said about life.

“Everything costs money and it seems to be getting worse by the day.

“All we do is listen, obey and work for our families and children because we’ve got no choice.”

To’oloa faces different challenges every day but he keeps a positive attitude.

Just like he is positive that one day soon he will find a job.
