Elevating Samoa to be on the same page with her Information Technology (I.T.) stakeholders internationally and on the local front is serious business for Computer Service Limited (C.S.L).

As one of the pioneer local I.T. companies, C.S.L. is back at the frontline as the brainchild behind a recent Regional Network Security Workshop with the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (A.P.N.I.C.) as partners.

The three day event provided much needed upskilling for I.T. technicians from government and the private sector to improve their network security intelligence.

For instance, the exercise was designed for participants to look at the nature and structure of network attacks and the motivation that drives such on line malicious activities.

Their other primary targets include:

• Examine devise and network infrastructure security with a focus on different layers to establish a robust, stable and secure network and protect the data and processes that our in networks; and

• Examine key concepts, protocols and policies to establish and maintain network security as well as bolster understanding and networking.

And C.S.L. is biting the bullet by taking the lead as part of her commitment to better prepare Samoa to handle the I.T. evolution with the Samoa National Broadband Highway and the Tui Samoa Cable soon to be commissioned.

In a nutshell, the ultimate goal is to “lift the calibre of our I.T. human resources through capacity building but most importantly cyber security for Samoa,” says C.S.L’s Chief Executive Officer, Laeimau Oketevi Tanuvasa.

“With the Tui Samoa Cable soon to be commissioned complemented by the Samoa National Broadway, Samoa’s I.T. sector will sky rocket as evidence by our connectivity locally and internationally to say the least.

“Costs will also drop to ensure accessibility and availability. We don’t have the luxury of time,” added Laeimau, backed by over 30 years of experience in the local industry and a current board member of the S.S.S.C. Company which owns the Tui Samoa Cable.

“Capacity building at the same time minimizing our vulnerability is a must to say the least,” she said.

“With Samoa securing more bandwidth that will open new bigger and better windows of I.T. communication to the rest of the world, we will be more vulnerable and as a country we need to be prepared,” echoes C.S.L’s Operations Manager Rita Eteuati. 

“It’s a priority not just for the I.C.T. sector but for Samoa,” continued the Operations Manager.

Both C.S.L. senior executives are also mindful that the spin-offs from Samoa’s I.C.T. evolution are astronomical noting that every sector will benefit from health to education, business investment and even tourism.

“So it is paramount for C.S.L. to continue to lead by example by providing every opportunity for our IT sector to be better equipped for things to come,” Laeimau concluded.

For sustainability, C.S.L. is planning regular capacity building workshops in a bid to continue the momentum from this week’s workshop. 

A.P.N.I.C. Senior Network Analyst Tashi Phuntsho is the resource personnel taking charge of the workshop.

Tashi has experience in IP and transmission network design, operation and maintenance having worked as a transmission engineer since 2003 and IP core network engineer since 2005 bringing to Samoa over a decade of valuable experience.

He has been involved in capacity development in the A.S.P.N.I.C. as Routing and Switching, Network Architecture, I.X.P. design and deployment, Network Security, IPv6 deployment, D.N.S.S.E.C. etc.

He completed his undergraduate studies in Electrical and Electronics engineering in India, complemented by research studies in next generation networks from Japan and Australia.
