One person working to support a family is a struggle.

This is the belief of a young mother of three, Elisapeta Kirisimasi, 35, from the village of Tapatapaō.

Mrs. Kirisimasi does not work, but instead carries out housewife chores for her small family. She also helps to look after her parents who live next door.

Mrs. Kirisimasi said her husband is the only person who works and the money he makes is not enough to support their family.

“My three children attend school, one is in primary school and two are in high school.

“The money my husband makes from his job goes towards supporting our children’s education, their school fees, lunch money and our daily meals.

“Paying our bills is another expense.”

Mrs. Kirisimasi told the Village Voice team that she really needs help with their house.

She shared the materials used to build their house were what they could afford back then.

“As you can see in our small house, we prepare and cook food on one side and we sleep on the other.

“The place is so small for us, but it’s the only thing my husband could afford for us.

“We still don’t have water connection in our house and we collect water from my parents’ house.”

Mrs. Kirisimasi also mentioned that rainy days are the worst time to be inside their house.

She said most of the tarpaulin that protects the house from torrential rainfall was teared apart by Tropical Cyclone Gita.

Mrs. Kirisimasi says she also wishes for a job, especially when their house needed repair post TC Gita, and her husband’s salary is not enough for their family.
