The Head of State, His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi, will open a major law conference being held in Apia this weekend.

The Joint Samoa Maori Law Societies Conference guided by the theme “Where is our Island? – Navigating the waves of custom and law – Finding ourselves in our Islands” is being held at the Taumeasina Island Resort.

His Highness Tui Atua is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the official opening this morning.

Some 85 participants from the esteemed legal professionals (25 from the Maori Law Society and 60 from the Samoa Law Society) are expected to attend.

Also in attendance are members of the Judiciary, Law academics, heads of Legal departments as well as private practitioners from both Law societies.

Among the first presenters at the conference today are former Attorney Generals, Taulapapa Brenda Heather-Latu and Aumua Ming Leung Wai.

The conference will be closed by the Chief Justice, His Honour Patu Tiava’asu’e Falefatu Sapolu tomorrow.

Last night at Taumeasina, a special ava ceremony was staged to welcome all the conference participants from New Zealand.
