“Life in the village is the best.”

That is according to Smiley Iopu from the village of Tufulele.

Aged 22, the young man believes that life in the village is way better than the town life.

Speaking to the Village Voice, Smiley said the simplicity and peacefulness of village life is why he prefers staying in the villages.

“Everything here makes you want to stay and not leave at all.

“We have pretty much the same things that Apia offers as well. But here, you get to live with the people that you grew up with, you get to spend time with your families and it’s very relaxed.

“Unlike the buzz of town, back here in the village, you don’t do much. Everything is peaceful here, we hardly have any troubles because we have strong village councils and the matai’s or the leaders are always taking care of our families.

“They control and monitor the behavior of the youths in the villages, they make decisions and they sort out any differences caused by families or people in the villages.”

Moreover, Smiley said that simplicity is one thing he loves about life in the village.

“You don’t need a lot of things to be happy.

“You go from one house to another, hang out and enjoy good company. We have games here in the evening where we can go and exercise and hang out with other youth.

“Even in families, everything is just easy and simple. Even if you only have fa’alifu for dinner, you can still enjoy it with the people that you love.”

At the moment, the 22-year-old is job hunting while waiting for his graduation in April this year.

He completed his studies at the National University of Samoa majoring in Computer Science.

His main goal for this year 2017 is to find a good job and work hard to help his family.
