Quit school to find a job

Finding employment can be extremely challenging for those who are simply trying to survive.

When you don’t know where your next meal is coming from or when you’re struggling to help your family, the answer is simple “look for a job!”

This is the opinion of Nu’u Aufale aged 20 of Falefa when Village Voice caught up with him yesterday fetching taro and coconut for his family evening meal.

“Unfortunately a job nowadays is hard to find,” he tells Village Voice team.

“I left school when I was in year 12, then I started looking for a job. Till now I still don’t have one.

“The big problem we have is no money because we only have one person who is employed.

“To be honest, the only reason I quit school is to find a job to help my family but I never realized that it would take four years for me to look for a job.

“While I’m looking for a job, I’m helping my parents around the house. Sometimes I go and sell some of our taro and bananas around the village to earn money.

He went on to say life isn’t easy and no matter how hard he tries his best to help his family with the plantation, a job is what he needs.

“Yes, some people say that a plantation is the way out of your struggles and if you have a plantation, there’s no need to look for a job.

“But to me personally, a job is the exact solution to all our problems.  We only need the plantation for food and everyday living but for the next 10 years, I encourage you to seek a job.

“I may not have the best education but I’m a worthy person for any job offered.

Nu’u went on to say all he hopes is to get hired soon.

“No matter how hard I try to help out, I still can’t give it my best because I don’t have any money.

“There will be a time when our parents are gone, and my one brother who we depend on will eventually have a family of his own, and then what?

“Who am I going to depend on? No one but me!

“I want to work, not only to help my family but to secure my future.
