The tournament was an initiative by Tennis Samoa to get more children into the sport and to encourage them to live a healthier lifestyle.

About 150 students from Vaiala, Samoa Primary, Peace Chapel, Ah Mu Academy and Robert Louis Stevenson came and took part in the tournament all eager to represent their schools.

Speaking to Samoa Observer, Kim Curruthers the Marketing Consultant for Vailima Breweries said that Samoa has the capabilities to excel in tennis.

“As seen with our very own Steffi Curruthers, Samoa can easily produce many more stars in the sport of tennis,” she said.

“Samoa Breweries wants to get behind developing all kinds of sports so when we were approached by Tennis Samoa we did not think twice about helping them out.”

Although the tournament only included 5 private schools there are plans to branch out to others.

According to Kim, Samoa Breweries is always happy to help when it comes to developing young sports stars.

“It’s all free, we just want to promote as many sports as we can because we are all about giving back to the community,” she said.

“(and) the best way we can give back to the community is to support the one thing with the power to bring people together… and that is sports.

We at Samoa Breweries also aim most of our focus towards schools and so we wanted to give them something to do on a Saturdays.”
