Samoa has changed a lot.

That’s the observation of 58-year-old Matua Uili from the village of Salamumu.

Matua believes there have been so many changes our people need to be alert.

“The huge change that I know of now here in Samoa is the cost of living which has been so high compared to what it was back then,” he told the Village Voice team yesterday.

“This includes the cost and prices of stuff, it is so expensive right now here in Samoa.

“Another change we have seen here in Samoa is that village councils have forgotten their responsibilities in controlling the villages.

“This leads to some villages stopped practicing old customs such as Tapu or Sa and that is why issues with youths are growing rapidly.”

Mr. Uili also mentioned the cost of living is the reason Tafa’igata Prison is overcrowded.

“Cost of living is the reason people are going there to Tafa’igata because the expensive cost of things in Samoa nowadays has led them to commit crimes such as stealing money.

“I also believe that the cost of living has made other people commit crimes such as selling and planting weed.”

Mr. Uili also noted the changes in people’s attitudes nowadays.

“The way people act today in their communities have changed too and that’s a silly change though.

“Back then, people always tend to give when the ‘fa’amolemole’ word was used, nowadays hardly people are sharing that anymore.”

Mr. Uili says if such changes continue in Samoa, it would not be a safe place to live in.

“I must say these changes are bad, and if it is going to continue over time, things will not look good for our treasure island.”
