Live within your means

God gave us the land and the sea and it is up to us to decide how we’re going to survive on it.

That’s according to Afuai Lefui of Salelesi and Fusi; just a simple motto for a simple life.

Mr. Lefui, 45, was approached by the Village Voice team when he was on his way to the plantation with his son yesterday.

“My family and I live just down the road at Salelesi but our plantation is on this mountain so that’s why you caught us here,” he told Village Voice.

“We come for the obvious reason and that is getting some food.

“What can I say? This is what we depend on for everything, simple as that.

He went on “Besides family obligations, there’s always something that requires us to look for money.

“So when that happens, we look to our plantation and to our animal farm.”

Mr. Lefui told Village Voice he has chickens and pigs on his farm and that’s what he’s developing for unexpected monetary matters.

“It’s not much but we try to do the best we can with what we have.

“You know I have two children; a son and a daughter to think about.”

Mr.Lefui said his son is the only one who’s old enough to attend school.

“So our son’s education is one monetary obligation.

“My wife and I also have my elderly mother to care for.

“So our plantation and our farm of chickens and pigs provides for us when we need money; we just try to sell them to people.

“But if we know there’s nothing else that we can do, then some of my family overseas offer to help us sometimes.

“I think our life is not that bad considering what’s happening in other parts of the world.

“I mean I think the only struggle we have is the long distance from our home to our plantation as well as birds destroying our crops sometimes but other than that, we are thankful we get to live life every day.

“Just be thankful with what you already have and don’t stress over a lifestyle that you can’t afford,” he said.
