PR – J.A.W.S., the National Media Association of Samoa is delighted with the feedback and the calibre of those who have expressed interest to become councillors of the Samoa Media Council.

The applications were closed 29 July 2016 and were duly opened when the J.A.W.S. Executive met Monday this week.

The calibre of the applicants who are highly regarded members of society, range from former international public servants to university lecturers and academics to senior church ministers, matais and lawyers.

J.A.W.S. President, Apulu Lance Polu says the calibre of those who have expressed interest indicate the care and concern the public has about the need for a vibrant, free and responsible media and the need to ensure the freedom to information and expression as the cornerstone of our democratic process.

J.A.W.S is now in the process of appointing the members to the council to be chaired by a retired judge or a lawyer with at least five years working experience.

The Association also has to address administrative issues such as setting up an office, staff and funding which are crucial to the functioning of the association and its development efforts for the local media as well as the workings of the Media Council.

The Media Council is a self-regulatory body that addresses complaints from the public about the media. J.A.W.S. is also working with partners on the development of its Code of Ethics and related training for its members.

J.A.W.S. was founded in the 1970s as the professional body for the local media and is now being established under the Media Council Act 2015.
