Route 66

Think a minute…The most famous highway in America is Route 66. A song was even written about it. It says: “If you ever plan to motor west, travel my way, take the highway that is best. Get your kicks on route sixty-six.”

It was officially called U.S. Highway 66 in 1926. Sadly, Route 66 was taken off road maps in 1985 and the signs were taken down. But in its glory days, Route 66 was known as the Great American Highway. It was 2,448 miles long, and ran all the way from Chicago in the center part of America to Los Angeles, California on the Pacific coast.

Route 66 not only was the shortest road to California, it was the most interesting and fun road to take, to see the great variety of America’s landscapes. These include majestic mountains, endless beaches, green valleys, vast grasslands, stunning deserts and canyons, freshwater rivers and lakes, along with its many small towns, big and bustling cities, and numerous local cultures. You never knew what you would see around the next curve in the road. That’s why it was called, The Main Street of America. There was something for everyone.

A wise man observed that there is another Route 66 that began about 3,500 years ago and took about 1,500 years to complete. Now for nearly 2,000 years, the 66 books of the Bible have been the road to real life. It leads and guides you through all the joys, discoveries, and painful challenges of your journey called life.

The Bible is also the most honest book ever written. It shows us how real people with real problems, faults and failures make wrong turns and go their own way. Yet these people can still return to the right road to be forgiven and freed to fully live the true, satisfying life we were created for.

So if you are lost because you’ve gone your own wrong way, you too can come home to your Creator’s way. The 66 books of the Bible is the real Route 66 that our Maker gave us to follow as His one Highway to Heaven. It not only shows you the way home to Him forever, but also how to enjoy a personal relationship with Jesus filled with His lasting love, peace, power and purpose now in this life. Just think a minute…
