Samoa’s vey own Eleanor Schuster and Vicky Leavai won gold medals in the women’s doubles division at the fifth Oceania Tennis Championship held in Apia last weekend.

In the men’s doubles division, Adam Lasky and Harrison Lee-Schell from Australia took gold while New Zealand’s Wesley Whitehouse came first in the men’s singles.

In the women’s division, Tamara Anderson took gold for Cook Islands with Australia claiming gold in the men’s doubles.

Daniel Llarenas from Guam and Vicky Leavai from Samoa won gold for the mixed doubles division.

Ten countries competed in this year’s six day tournament held at Apia Park: Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, Guam, Federated States of Micronesia, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Tahiti-nui, Vanuatu and Samoa.

The Oceania Championships was run by the Oceania Tennis Federation.

The concept of the championship was to provide high level competitive tennis in the Pacific for Pacific players in the years where there was no Pacific Games and to involve all Oceania nations including Australia and New Zealand.

The best players of the region can play against each other every other four years with the intention to invite Australia and New Zealand to make the event competitively stronger compared to the Pacific Games.
