Not many people like the wet season.

But if you are a farmer like Sa Lauese, you will be rejoicing.

“We had a long drought with no rain but this is really good,” he said yesterday.

The 42-year-old from the village of Tuana’i was working at his plantation during the heavy downpours of yesterday.

“It’s a good time to plant things,” he said. “The soil is nice and soft and the rain makes our work easier.”

Asked about his life today, Mr. Lauese said life is hard but lazy people will suffer more.

“Trust me it won’t get any easier by just sitting around and complaining,” he said.

“I believe the only way and the best way to tackle this hardship is by hard working.”

Mr. Lauese said there is no one in his family that has a formal job. So their livelihood depends on the plantation.

“I am not married and I don’t have children but I am living with my brothers and their kids at our house.

“Our plantation is our main source of income there is for our family.

“We have a huge banana patch, we don’t sell it at the market, we supply our bananas for this one family that produces chips and that’s how we get our money.

“Another source of income we usually get is when people invite us to do some work at their places.”

The only thing that worries Mr. Lauese is the arrival of the cyclone season.

“We all know what happens to our plantations when it comes to the cyclone season. I just hope there is no cyclone coming this year.”

Mr. Lauese added that there is no better way to earn money than working the plantation.

“There are lots of ways to earn money, but to me the best way is working the plantation because you are working for yourself and your family.”
