Heading back to Savai’i

After speaking to Fili Unasa from Mulifanua yesterday, the Village Voice team understands that the 50 year old very much misses his life in Savaii.

According to Mr. Unasa, everything is going well but current issues such as  lack of jobs and the expensive cost of living is causing him to be worried.

“My family is from Faga, Savaii and we are planning to move back there,” he told Village Voice.

“But you know, it all depends on our situation here in Upolu.”

Mr. Unasa only has two daughters, who are both working at Yazaki and it’s a matter of anxiety to him and his family because Yazaki will be closing soon.

“My daughters are our source of income; they are the ones providing for our family, paying for everything that we need.

“So once there’s no Yazaki, that’s a dead end for us because how are we going to financially support ourselves?

“Sure, this is my own land, we have good water, perfect electricity but once there’s no one to work for the family, then obviously we can’t pay for those things anymore.

“The fact here is that the cost of living is not cheap anymore and   jobs are really hard to find.

“And that’s the reason why we are thinking of moving back to Savaii because there is so much land there to survive on, unlike here in Upolu.

“I’ve been standing here all morning, trying to find some work to do on this land but the land here is nothing like the land in Savaii.”

“Another thing, I only have two daughters but I also have my other relative’s children to take care of because they are staying at my house to be close to school and that’s a lot of work and a lot of money.

“So everything would be easier for me if we do go back to Savaii and I honestly prefer the life there because you don’t have to worry about so many obligations.”
