Exports awards launched

The Samoa Association of Manufacturers and Exporters (S.A.M.E.) and the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour (M.C.I.L.) have launched the 2017 S.A.M.E. Samoa Export Awards 2017. 

S.A.M.E. President, Tautaituasivi Tagaloa Wilson explained that in small developing countries, exports are a key driver to economic growth which in turn improves health and education. 

“The government is to be congratulated for the implementation of a diverse range of strategies aimed at stimulating economic growth for the Country,” he said. 

“The focus on exports and the launch of the Export Awards will be a key contributor in growing the economy.” 

The President also made it clear that the selection process lies solely with M.C.I.L. 

According to a press statement, the Samoa Exports Awards aims to supporting the S.A.M.E. Samoa Export plan to strengthen export growth and trade developments. 

“The S.A.M.E. export plans has as its overall objective to achieve exports of $100million by the year 2020,” says the Press Statement.  

At the launching, M.C.I.L. Chief Executive Officer Pulotu Lyndon Chu-Ling noted the government’s support of the awards. 

“The Samoa Export Awards pay tribute to the achievements and contributions exporters have made to the Samoan economy. Produced by S.A.M.E. in partnership with the Samoa Government the awards will celebrate export excellence through leadership and innovation.” 

“This initiative also highlight the government’s commitment to increasing export products and emphasizing the importance of exporting with in the samoan economy.” 

The objectives of the Export Awards are to Recognize and Reward excellence in exporting; Encouraging and stimulate exporting activity; Raise awareness of Samoa’s Trading Partners of Samoa’s products and services; Build greater understanding of what is required to succeed in exporting; Build Partnerships between Government and Private Sector to support export growth; and Encourage Innovation amongst Manufacturers, Exporters and Service Providers.

There are seven Award Categories: overall exporter of the year; best agriculture and fisheries export; best value added export; best service export; excellence in export marketing; best emerging export and best in innovation. The awards will be based on the performance of participating businesses over the calendar year 2017 (January to 31 December 2017). 

All final arrangements, including sponsorship details, will be announced next month by Minister for Commerce, Industry and Labour, Lautafi Fio Purcell.

The Awards Ceremony is schedule to be held on the second week of April 2018.
