Stay safe and be safe in 2017.

That’s the message from the Commissioner of the Samoa Fire and Emergency Services Authority (F.E.S.A), Lelevaga Fa’afouina Mupo.  

Speaking to the Weekend Observer, the Commissioner said the 2016 Festive Season was relatively peaceful and incident free.

He said despite the heavy downpours causing flooding in some areas of the country, there were no deaths reported in relation to them.

 “In the past we’ve had tragic accidents, but apart from that it has been very safe and peaceful,” he said.

“You never know, probably next week, depends on the weather report.  We have to wake up all the families and community to be prepared.”

The Commissioner strongly advises the community to be on high alert and be prepared for the worst.  

“We keep advising the public, especially the people who reside near main rivers, down in Faleata.  Awareness is key to keep the public informed and advised.” 

He could not be any more clear to proceed with caution especially those residing near rivers and bridges to practice safety precautions during this wet season.

The Commissioner stressed the importance of keeping a watchful eye on children who play near the rivers and could be swept away by strong currents.  

“Our boys conducted a patrol to keep the public informed to stay away, especially the kids.  You never know the kids they might be running throughout the river.  We are asking the elders to please look out for them.

 “We just want to keep our country safe,” the Commissioner stated.    

Lelevaga’s message is clear: be aware, alert and prepared for any situation.
