Six more volunteers from Japan

Samoa has welcomed six more Japanese volunteers through Japan International Cooperation Agency (J.I.C.A’s) Volunteer programme,

The volunteers comprise of five senior volunteers and one junior volunteer.  

This brings a total of 34 volunteers currently working in Samoa, and a total of 604 past and present J.I.C.A volunteers who have served and worked closely with the people of Samoa, since 1972. 

The new recruits will serve their assignments for a period of two years.   

Their areas of expertise include Agriculture, Water Quality, Marine Engineering, Nursing, Special Needs Assistance and Education and Veterinary.   

The latter (veterinary), attached to the Animal Production and Health Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (M.A.F) Savaii office, will assist greatly with the livestock needs on the big island.  

The remaining five volunteers, dispatched to other organisations in Upolu, will work with Samoa Nurses Association, Water Resources Division of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Samoa Shipping Corporation, Nursing Department of the Faculty of Applied Science at the National University of Samoa and Aoga Fiamalamalama Society for the Intellectually Handicapped (I.H.C).

They are into their first week of a four-week in-country orientation programme, before official work commencement with their respective organisations.  

The Senior Volunteer assigned to work with Aoga Fiamalamalama, has already proven popular with his basic Samoan language skills, which he learnt in Japan before arriving in Samoa. 

 The group are expected to start work on Monday, 29 February 2016.

The ties between Samoa and Japan have been further enhanced through on-going mutual cooperation.
