A young man from Puipa’a and Nu’u-fou is a strong believer in blessings from the elders.

Tofilau Tinei, 23, has decided to stay home to look after his parents.

His day begins early in the morning when he wakes up to prepare their breakfast. The day continues when he works on the garden, does chores at home until the evening when he has to prepare some more food.

Tofilau said he is happy with his lot in life.

“You know, people nowadays worry about how massive their houses should be, how many cars to buy but I tell you if happiness doesn’t exit, it’s a waste of time,” he said.

“We don’t ask for much. We learn to be grateful with whatever comes. We have access to both water, electricity and food that’s all that matters.”

He agrees that life is full of challenges.

“Life has many challenges, sometimes good sometimes bad, but we keep on working and sticking together to make things work for our families.”

Tofilau said we have to take life as it comes.

“For me at this moment, my decision is to stay home to help my family, look after my parents,” he said.

“In the long run, I want a job so I can make some money to continue to help my family.”

He also believes in the virtues of hard, honest work.

“I find the harder I work the more blessed I get. It doesn’t matter the struggle we‘ve just got to tell ourselves we can do it and work harder.”

Now getting back to those blessings from the elders, Tofilau said it’s like an investment.

“You don’t see the results right away,” he said.

“But I believe that down the line we will reap the rewards.”
