PR - National consultations with civil society organizations and the private sector to develop the new United Nations Pacific Strategy (U.N.P.S.) 2018 – 2022 will take place tomorrow at the F.A.O. Conference Room at Matautu-Uta starting from 9:00am.

More than 50 participants are expected to attend representing N.G.O.s, civil society groups, farmer groups, culture and fine arts, private sector representatives, tourist operators, and youth groups.

The in-country consultations is an indispensable component of the U.N. Pacific Strategy development process. A successful consultation will ensure that the new strategy is aligned with key regional and national development priorities, to be addressed in partnerships with government, civil society and other partners, as well as foster ownership of the U.N.P.S.

Organised by the U.N. Country Team in Samoa, a key objective of the consultations with civil society and the private sector is to reach an agreement on possible partnerships between the U.N. and key development actors in contextualizing and implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (S.D.G.s) in Samoa during 2018-2022, that is the U.N. Pacific Strategy cycle.

U.N. Resident Coordinator and U.N.D.P. Resident Representative, Lizbeth Cullity, said the national consultations are to reinforce U.N. commitment to the S.A.M.O.A. Pathway and support the achievement of the S.D.G.s and the Agenda 2030. “The forum will discuss and jointly identify key recommendations on how the U.N. can partner with civil society groups and the private sector in achieving the national development priorities towards the S.D.G.s.”

The national consultations with civil society and private sector precedes a similar consultation that will be held next Thursday 23rd June 2016 with representatives from the government of Samoa and Tokelau.
