They say it’s hard to find a job nowadays which is problematic.

But Kelekolio Ropati from Lotofaga and Safata, thinks the real problem is that people are job hunting in the wrong places.

The 48 year old works as a chef and it is from his experience in the workforce, that he knows what he’s talking about when it comes to seeking work opportunities.

“I think a lot of people are working in Apia, in fact I think a lot of people will aim to work at Apia straight after their school years,” he said to the Village Voice.

“But you see, if people think that there is a lack of jobs, the question is have they considered applying to some of the new businesses set up in the rural villages; like beach fale businesses and resorts?

“This should also be a project for the government because the population in the town area is increasing and that is why it’s hard to find a job there.

He went on “Working here at one of the village resorts, it has made me realize that without these new businesses, a lot of us here wouldn’t have jobs.

“Having many businesses here gives us more work opportunities especially for people who barely go in to Apia.

“A lot of tourists make time to visit the rural villages to see what’s happening. 

“I think it’s a good experience for me and I think that not only will it develop the village, it will develop the country and will improve the skills and knowledge of our people.

“The government should make this issue as one of their priorities because honestly, being an employee here in the village, I see there’s a great need for even more workers.

“That’s why I left work in Apia and came here because not only is it close to my home but there’s more to it. 

“You can also save your money because unlike Apia, there are no shops here that attract you to buy this and that or go here and there, no. After work, the only place available for you to go to, is home.

“For people who have experience in the workforce and people who have just received their degrees, I recommend you try to find work opportunities in rural villages and have the experience of your life. You know it’s a different environment but it’s amazing.”
