P.M. says he’s not “micromanaging”

Prime Minister Tuilaepa Dr Sailele Malielegaoi has denied that he is “micromanaging” the Audit Office.

He was responding to an article in the November 11, 2018 edition of the Sunday Samoan titled “P.M. writes to Minister of Audit Office”, which was based on a letter he wrote early this month to the Minister of Audit, Sala Fata Pinati.

Speaking during his weekly media program on Tuesday before leaving for Australia, Tuilaepa slammed the reporter and called her “stupid” before explaining that the audit process overseen by the Audit Office is lengthy.

“The auditors prepare audit reports for a certain ministry, the said ministry is then given the opportunity to respond, and then the final report is submitted to Parliament for their review.

“However, the Ministers have complained that it appears the audit reports are being submitted to Parliament and without the responses by the Ministries and making it seem issues raised by the auditors are not being addressed,” he said.

Turning to the article that revealed details of his letter, he said: “However, the article written by this little girl who is stupid, she said I am micromanaging the Audit Office.”

It is not known if the concerns expressed by the Ministers—which the Prime Minister raised in his November 2, 2018 letter to Sala Fata Pinati—comes as a result of Samoa Observer coverage in recent months of various audit reports released by the Audit Office.
