Seven carpenters from Samoa have been designated to work in New Zealand as part of the Canterbury Trade Employment Initiative for twelve months.

It was both an exciting and overwhelming sight at the Faleolo International Airport witnessing the travelers say their goodbyes to their families as it will be the very first time for all of them to travel for work.

Digicel’s Diaspora Manager, Leaupepe Talai Lene had comforting news for the first six workers to leave and their families at the airport.

Staying in touch with families has been made easier for the travelers as each were presented with a Call Samoa Pack which includes a free SIM for their phones to call or text families in Samoa at the most affordable rates.

Furthermore, all of the workers Digicel numbers were packed with 50 free voice minutes a day for all of the twelve months they will be in New Zealand.

Moreover, one particular service that really put the workers minds at ease was the Digicel Mobile Money (D.M.M), each of them had accounts provisioned for their numbers and created at the airport, making it easier for them to save and send money home at very low costs.

“The seasonal workers are leaving their families behind and being able to provide a service that allows them to keep in touch every day for free will help them overcome the distance and being homesick,” said Leaupepe.

The men expressed their gratitude to Digicel for their assistance as they are now more relaxed and assured that communication with families will be easier than they thought.  Digicel customers can also use the Call Samoa and DMM services if they go to New Zealand, Australia or USA for seasonal work, visitors or for students who are studying at these countries.
