Climate Change is no joke

Climate change is the consequence of our actions as caretakers of this planet earth.

Sio Gasio of Nofoali’i, 63, made this comment while referring to the sudden change in weather pattern.

“And this is a threat to Samoa,” Sio said when the Village Voice team interviewed him yesterday.

Sio was heading to work and was excited to share what his thoughts were on the sudden change of weather patterns in Samoa.

The issue of climate change is not new to us at all, and Sio thinks we should not take it lightly.

“I grew up hardly hearing of tsunamis and earthquakes rather than stories from the Bible, but lately we have seen them and we are vulnerable.

“Samoa is heading to its cyclone season and even when we were in the dry season we witnessed rain during that period of time.”

Sio thinks climate change is a threat because of us and it’s we who damage the ozone layer through our actions - pollution.

“We have been careless for so long that we have been victims and vulnerable to climatic threats nowadays.

“The changing weather not only causes threats to us people but also our environment and vegetation, so it’s a huge loss.

“I remember after cyclone Evan we were struggling to get back because most of our plantation and food was destroyed during the cyclone,” Sio added.
