No shame in life of hardship

There is no shame when you are desperate.

So shared a father of six Satini Vaogogo, 31, from the village of Nofoali’i. Mr. Vaogogo was preparing a umu with his brother in-law yesterday morning when Village Voice met up with him at his place.

Mr. Vaogogo said life is really hard for his family because him and his wife do not have formal jobs.

“My wife is responsible for taking our kids to school,” he said.

“My responsibility within our family is providing food as well as supporting them from my plantation around my house, and fishing.”

Mr. Vaogogo said they don’t have running water.

“We have been living here for over three years now and we still haven’t had running water for our house,” he said.

“The only way we get water is we wait until it rains and sometimes we get it from the coastal area.”

Money is a major problem.

“I must say that food is not a struggle to us because I am strong enough to work our plantation for food, as well as to go fishing.

“The only way we are earning money today is from the fish that I sell but that depends on the weather.

“Everything in Samoa right now is all about money and that is another struggle.

“Not only we have to make money to support our kids and pay our own bills like cash power, we also have to have money for family obligations.

“From family obligations, we also have to have money to support the church, as well having money for the village council’s commitment.”

Mr. Vaogogo also added life is not that easy anymore and he is not shy to ask for help.

“I am struggling so bad trying to support my six children because they are still young and will be in School soon.

“With my struggle I am not ashamed to ask for help for me and my family.
