A young Samoan woman, Faamanu Kelemete, is heading to Geneva.

The Board member of the Young Women’s Christian Association of Samoa (Y.M.C.A.) has been chosen to attend a UN Human Rights Committee meeting in there. 

The 20-year-old is studying for her Bachelor of Education at the National University of Samoa. 

She was raised by her father after her mother passed in 2008.

Fa’amanu is very aware of the importance of human rights in the lives of all people and especially the youth of Samoa. 

“If we understand and learn about Human Rights we will learn to live peacefully with those around us,” she said.

She hopes to network and learn from the experts attending the meeting in Geneva. 

The opportunity will broaden her outlook as she prepares to become a teacher and inspire Samoan children to strive to be the best they can be.

Being a member of the Young Women’s Christian Association of Samoa, Fa’amanu stated: “Since joining the Y.W.C.A., I have become more confident to speak publicly, I have learned how to be involved in peer education and I can speak on key issues that affect Samoan young women.

I have shared many new experiences with others and hope that young women can assist each other to develop their self esteem and potential. Young people have many obstacles to face within society, but together we have the potential to better ourselves and in turn to create a better Samoa.”
