Vaiala Beach School showcased their annual science fair on Thursday ending with prizegiving for the winners of the science fair competition.

Organiser, Annie Meredith was impressed with the quality of the entries this year and said this is the third year that the school has held this event and its purpose is to make science “come alive” and inspire their students to have an interest in the field.

“We are really trying to not have science just be in the text books but in real life everyday examples,” she said.

“We were very proud to see the high quality work by the students.”

All students had to give a brief presentation to the judge the day before and according to the Year 8 judge Dr. Frank Griffin from South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (S.P.R.E.P.), he was pleasantly surprised at the wide range of knowledge on such broad scientific topics

“The students did lots of good quality research which translated to high quality presentation so the judging part was quite difficult.

“There were a good number of very good projects on display but also the verbal presentation was very good. In the end it was a hard decision and it came down to originality and the science behind how it related to everyday living. Some standouts were projects on plastics and carbon footprints but everyone deserves a pat on the back for their projects.”

The range of projects was diverse with projects based on physics, biology, environment, nutrition and chemistry.

The event was sponsored by S.P.R.E.P. and Bluesky.
