A man from Lotofaga, Safata, is dead after he was allegedly struck by another man using a farming tool on Sunday.

The Samoa Observer visited Lotofaga yesterday and tried to get comments from the family of the deceased, but they refused.

“It’s our own family problems and we don’t want people to know about it,” said a family member.

However, Lotofaga villagers who were standing on the roadside and didn’t want to be identified, confirmed the death when questioned by this newspaper.

A woman from the neighbouring Sataoa village, who identified herself as the wife of senior village chief, also said the death in Lotofaga is the talk of her village.

She said a relative is suspected to have inflicted the injuries.

Three members of the public, who were at the hospital when the deceased was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit, said he sustained three deep cuts to the head.

A hospital nurse told this newspaper that the victim was taken in at around 3pm on Sunday.

The hospital staff at the I.C.U. refused to divulge information on the deceased, saying they cannot release information to the media unless the family gave its approval.

Comment has been sought from the Ministry of Police.

*An earlier version of the story said a machete was suspected to have been used. A member of the family has corrected this to say it was a farming tool instead, a shovel with a blunt end.
