The days of fat and unfit Police officers in the Samoa Police force are numbered.
The Ministry of Police is making fitness one of their priorities and a key part of that is a Zumba programme on Tuesday.
The programme is offered to members of the public and officers behind the Fire Station from 4:30-5:30pm.
Inspector Detective Maotaoalii Kaioneta Kitiona said that any form of exercise is vital to the work of the police.
“This is very important for the Ministry of Police; this is part of our annual activities which targets fitness,” he said. “Everyone knows where the police stand in terms of fitness; we had the approved response by our police commissioner to have a one hour Zumba session every week on Tuesday from 4:30 to 5:30pm.
“With this zumba programme we aim to keep up the fitness of the police officers and the civilians who want to join us.
“Fitness is very important for the officers so that they may perform their duties to perfection as well as health monitoring.”
According to Maotaoalii, if the police wish to move forward in their line of work, then fitness should be taken seriously.
“The officers and also the staff members need this so that we can upgrade in terms of services to the country for the sake of the future movement of this ministry,” he said.
“We need to prepare for anything that happens in our country and we can be ready for any sort of emergency and any high level operations.”
The zumba classes have already managed to draw in quite a big crowd who all want a fitter future.
“This programme is made up of officers, family members as well as random people,” Maotaoalii said.
“This programme is open to everyone in the community and it is free, if you want to come then there’s no problem, just come on down and get fit.
“For the staff off-duty, this is the best to keep healthy in such an active job.”
Maotaoalii understands the public’s insults towards the police’s fitness level saying that it is something that needs to change.
“A lot of the people complain that our officers are very fat and that they should be slim and fit instead,” he said.
“They have a point because we have to be ready for anything; if we must jump in the ocean then we have to be ready, if we have to run then we must be ready, if a fight breaks out then we must be ready.
“We are taking fitness really serious now so come on down and join us.”
